One question though: have you looked at igraph? I vaguely remember you mentioning it. It looks like it already has a ruby library built on top of it... a lot of the docs are kinda confusing, not sure whether Gremlin is compatible, and it seems pretty low-level... but maybe something that could be easily enhanced for a Ruby (and C-powered) graph db?
